Built in 1672 to celebrate the victories of Louis XIV on the Rhine, when forty fortified places were captured from the enemy in only two months. Hence the allegorical figures depicting Holland and the Rhine (work of the Anguier brothers) and the bas-reliefs representing the crossing of the Rhine and the taking of Maastricht.
