This street is the main thoroughfare in the city's Jewish quarter (the Marais is referred to by a specific expression in Yiddish, namely the Pletzl or "square"). With the exception of Saturdays, the Sabbath, crowds of food lovers flock here to buy kosher food, oriental specialities and pastries. Hebrew shop signs remain a distinctive feature of the street, despite the fashion boutiques that are increasingly taking over the district.
