This jewel of Gothic art was built upon the order of Saint Louis to house the relics of Christ and the Virgin Mary. Located in the confines of the Palais de Justice, Sainte-Chapelle is divided into two parts: the lower chapel, intended for the palace servants; and the upper chapel, which was connected to the royal apartments. The magnificent 13C stained glass windows, the oldest to survive in Paris, combine to form a breathtaking expanse of brilliant colour.
