In 1766, Emperor Josef II opened up this large walled hunting ground to the public. The Prater soon became a popular destination with the locals and for horse and carriage rides. People went to cafés to dance the waltz, which was hugely popular in the Belle-Époque. The Prater itself is immense (over 5km long), but the fairground, known as the Wurstelpark, is the most popular section, with its giant Ferris Wheel immortalised by Carol Reed in his film, The Third Man.
