Wangerooge, the easternmost of the East Frisian Islands, has belonged to Holland, France and Russia (twice), and since 1818 to the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. It is an attractive haven for relaxed family holidays. The colourful island train runs from the solitary port on the southwest point, past lagoons rich in bird life straight to the village.
