On show are pictures by the Pita Maha group, which nurtured Balinese art in the 1930s-40s: historically limited to Hindu mythology and local folklore, Balinese artists, influenced by foreign styles, expanded their sources to secular themes. The introduction of different media and techniques, broader palettes of colour and western notions of aesthetics (perspective, chiaroscuro, the human form) gave birth to a new wave of painting.
