This large estate, formerly a farm, was acquired in the late 19C by the American sculptor Daniel Chester French (1850-1931). French is probably best remembered for the impressive seated Abraham Lincoln he sculpted for the Lincoln Memorial in the nation's capital. French executed more than 100 public monuments during his lifetime. The large Colonial Revival house (designed by Henry Bacon) replaced the farmhouse originally on the property. The house is furnished as it was when the artist lived here. Also on the grounds is French's spacious, well-lit studio (another Henry Bacon design), with its tall double doors and railroad tracks that allowed French to move large works outdoors, where he could work in natural light.
