The name "Utah Beach" comes from the American state chosen as a codename for a landing point chosen by British general Montgomery. The strategy was to establish a beachhead directly in the Cotentin peninsula with a view to taking the Cherbourg deep-sea harbour more quickly. The marker 00 stands here, the starting point of "Liberty Road", which was created in 1947 in tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives in the D-Day landings of 6 June 1944.
