This forest boasts 1,600ha/4,000 acres with some ancient trees (400 oaks and 260 beeches almost three hundred years old planted during the reign of Louis XIV). A well-marked trail leads visitors to trees that are more than 40m/130ft tall. The most handsome can be seen in the Série Artistique. A little further on, you will come across the ruins of the former (private) Charterhouse, after which the forest is named.
