Sheltering the port from the fury of the ocean is a small strip of land on which the ship-owners built their houses in the 17C. In 1749, a terrible tidal wave occurred, which destroyed 200 houses and engulfed two-thirds of the strip of land. Rue Mazarin, the main road in this district, has retained some of its wealthy residences, such as St Martin's at n°13.
