Housed in the castle, this museum's archaeological collections form an enthralling narrative of France's past, from the first signs of human presence to the dawn of the Middle Ages. Some of the high points include the Dame de Brassempouy, a major Palaeolithic work, the neighing horse head of the Mas d'Azil, Gallo-Roman ceramics, Merovingian sepultures, and the votive chariot of Mérida. One of the museum's fortes is its priceless collections of prehistoric engravings on bone and stone.
