The cathedral, which grew out of a Benedictine monastery founded in the 7C, has two formal square towers (18C) that are in contrast with its fine Romanesque portal. Dynamited in November 1944, the vaults and eastern side have been restored to their former glory. The pillars in the Romanesque nave are crowned by beautifully sculpted capitals. Late-13C stained-glass windows relate episodes from the life of Deodatus of Nevers (shortened to Dié); abstract stained-glass windows, made by a team of artists led by Jean Bazaine, were added in 1987.
