The many modern spa facilities have done nothing to take from the traditional infrastructure of the village and island. The old church dating from 1696 is the oldest intact sanctuary on the East Frisian islands. A Pietà made of wood and fragments of the pulpit are said to have come from a Spanish Armada ship that sank in 1588. The shellfish museum is also an original attraction.
