This temple commemorates Okichi Saito (1841-1890). At the age of sixteen, having trained as a geisha, Okichi was forced by the shogunate to become a rashamen (these were Japanese women who became concubines to Westerners). The government hoped to play this extraordinarily beautiful woman as their trump card during the negotiations with the Consul General Harris (1804-1878). Once the treaty was signed, Okichi took to a nomadic life of drinking and ultimately drowned herself. In giving her a sepulture, the abbot has unwittingly assured the popularity of the temple.
