Opened in 1998, this opera house adds a French touch to the heart of Shanghai, the result of a design by the architect Jean-Marie Charpentier. The building's circular arch roof turns up to the sky and the use of glass gives it a certain transparency. The interior, decorated with marble walls and floors, houses three concert halls; the largest of these (1 800 seats) is used for opera, ballet, concerts and musicals. From the top floor, there is a stunning view of the square.
