Santa Clara was the scene of a decisive battle between Che Guevara and Batista, who subsequently fled into exile. This square commemorates the cult of Guevara, with an underground mausoleum where the guerrilla leader and six of his comrades are buried. This is one of Cuba's iconic sights, watched over by a monumental bronze statue of Guevara in military uniform.
