The shrine of San Andrés de Teixido stands in a timeless setting overlooking the sea on the mountainous western slopes of Cape Ortegal. It is the focus of an important annual pilgrimage on 8 September. According to a proverb, "anyone who has not visited San Andrés de Teixido in life will do so after death in the form of an insect". Another (more cheerful) popular belief is that an aphrodisiac herb is grown and picked in the local area.
