The historic city borders a harbor, which is almost landlocked except for a slim passage to the ocean known as The Narrows. Only about 207m/680ft wide, this channel is flanked by 150m/500ft cliffs rising on the north side to form Signal Hill. For about 1.6km/1mi the harbour widens to nearly 800m/5mi, surrounded by steep slopes on which the city is built. The busy docklands are lively and packed with colourful houses, pubs and restaurants.
