With a surface area of 370km2, Svartisen is Norway's second largest glacier. It has 60 branches, the most famous of which is Østerdalsisen. The view of this enormous mass of ice, which is slowly disintegrating to form tiny icebergs that drift imperceptibly on the lake, is an impressive sight. A boat takes you across Lake Svartisvatnet in 20min; a 3km path then leads to the foot of Østerdalsisen.
