The shops of Via del Corso and Via del Tritone make this one of Rome's liveliest squares. At the centre, the Column of Marcus Aurelius, was erected between 176 and 193 AD, depicting the emperor's military feats on the banks of the Danube. The statue of the emperor which once crowned the top of the column was replaced in 1589 by a statue of St Paul.
