This easy hike (8.6km there and back - 3hr 30min) skirts the edge of the rampart presiding over the Enclos du Piton de la Fournaise. It is mainly worth doing for the view from the summits of Piton Partage (2 359m) and Nez Coupé de Sainte-Rose (2 078m). In the Enclos, lava flows having slid from the flanks of the volcano rush onto the Grandes Pentes to meet in the Plaine des Osmondes. It is as if time has ground to a halt, leaving these torrents frozen in situ, in shades varying from light brown to charcoal grey.
