A long stroll through the Rambouillet forest will reveal a series of terraced lakes created between 1675 and 1685 at Vauban's request to carry water to the pools at Versailles in accordance with Louis XIV's wishes. From the two Étangs de Hollande there is a succession of six pools on different levels separated by causeways. Only the furthermost pools are filled with water today.
