The so-called Mastic Villages region covers the entire southern part of the island of Chios. This is where the mastic, or lentisc, tree grows: a 2m-high shrub from which an aromatic resin is obtained as an exudation from the bark by making incisions. According to locals, it has an array of therapeutic virtues (notably aiding digestion). On the way, you can admire the gorgeous church of Pirgi or unwind on the black pebble beaches of Emporeios.
