This botanical garden was established in the 18C by order of Charles III. The small 2ha enclosure houses an extraordinary profusion of all sorts of species of trees and flowers. While some of the species are native to the Canary Islands, others originate from further afield, but all exhibit remarkable growth rates thanks to the island's climate. There is an astonishing number of different types of palm tree. Yet the most extraordinary sight in the garden has to be a ficus, almost two centuries old, whose secondary roots are like stilts.
