This pretty, triangular esplanade is bordered by the belfry and the theatre. Between these two buildings is the 5m-high funerary stele of a local Roman aedile (2C AD): the Monument to Orpheus, symbol of Ptuj, of which it was also the pillory in the Middle Ages. At the upper corners, two lions grasp ram heads. Among them appears Serapis, the Greco-Egyptian deity of fertility and resurrection. In the centre, Orpheus mourns his beloved Eurydice and leads a procession of animals with his lyre.
