Like Národní Třída (National Avenue), which continues westward from it, beyond the Golden Cross at the entrance to Wenceslas Square, Na Příkopě was, as its name indicates, built on top of the moat that followed the line of the Old Town walls. Away from the city's traffic and tramways, the street was inhabited mainly by Prague's German community in the late 19C and boasts some interesting historic buildings.
