Woodland gardens with spring-blooming rhododendrons and azaleas cover the 62-acre grounds of this outdoor Catholic shrine established in 1924. On the lower level a reproduction of Michaelangelo's Pietà is set within a grotto carved into a 110ft-high basalt cliff. An elevator takes visitors to the top of the bluff for panoramic views of the Cascade Mountains and Columbia River Valley. Perched on the edge of the cliff, the Meditation Chapel is a granite-clad structure with a triangular floor plan and immense structural glass windows looking north to Mt. St. Helens.
