William Whidden, a prominent architect in late-19C and early 20C Portland, designed this robust four-story building, modeled on an Italian palazzo and completed in 1895. Faced with Wyoming sandstone, it features an entrance loggia upheld by pink scagliola columns and urns (replicas of the original limestone) atop a balustraded roof. A two-year, $29 million renovation completed in 1998 restored many of the interior's original details, including light courts; open, steel elevator shafts with wrought-iron stair rails; and marble-tile floors. A bronze replica of the Liberty Bell, cast in 1964, sits outside at the southeast corner of the building.
