This mythical place is the territory of the patron saint of Alsace. Standing over 750m high, the pink, forest-clad sandstone cliffs stand out above the plain of Alsace. Every year, a million tourists make the climb for the view, the religious nature of the site or to unravel the mystery of the famous Pagan Wall. Odile, blind and frail at birth, was rejected by her father, Duke Etichon, the owner of Hohenbourg castle. Saved by her nurse, Odile recovered her sight when baptised and decided to devote her life to religion. After many trials and tribulations, her father gave her a castle where she established her convent. A number of miracles were soon to be attributed to her. When the saint died, her tomb became a place of pilgrimage. From 1870 to 1914, St Odile embodied the resistance of Alsace against the Prussians. The convent has many points of interest: the convent church, the chapels of the Cross, St Odile, Tears and Angels and a terrace with an exceptional panoramic view over the plain of Alsace and the Black Forest. Finally, the colossal structure of the Pagan Wall is a particularly impressive sight.
