Reached along the Reparto Chacón road and lying 4km east of Nueva Gerona is the island's most famous site, the Presidio Modelo, one of the first maximum security jails in Latin America. Built between 1926 and 1931 under the Machado regime, this prison owes its renown to the revolutionaries held here in the 1950s, including Fidel Castro. It is today a museum recounting its own history and that of the revolutionary struggle.
