Hatfield is the headquarters for Oregon State University's highly esteemed marine research program, an affiliation that explains the authoritative and richly detailed marine science exhibits in the large, newly expanded public wing. Interactive computer games, videos, a microscope lab and many other exhibits teach visitors about such matters as whale calls, the prediction of tsunamis (tidal waves), and the connections between the learning processes of sea slugs and those of humans. Many of the exhibits reflect the latest research being conducted by Hatfield scientists. Though important scientific concepts are examined, they are presented in clear, entertaining ways for a lay audience; numerous exhibits are geared for children.
