Neckarsteinach is renowned for the four castles that watch over the region. The oldest, the Hinterburg, built just after the year 1000 and now in ruins, was the stronghold of the Knights of Steinach. The little 14C castle of Burg Schadeck is nicknamed "the swallows' nest" due to its situation. The other two castles are owned privately.
