Nagoya Castle was built in 1612 by order of the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu for his ninth son Yoshinao. It remained extremely well preserved until 1868 but was entirely destroyed in 1945. The keep was rebuilt in line with the original in 1959. It houses gorgeous folding screens and fusuma (sliding partitions) from the ancient Honmaru Palace, and affords pretty views from its 46m-high vantage point. The rest of the buildings are due to be reconstructed in the next few years. The fine Ninomaru Garden rounds off your visit.
