Melnik's slightly nostalgic charm is the town's main attraction. Its white houses, camped on stone bases, are built in terraces on slopes crowned by "pyramids", on both sides of a mountain stream. It is difficult to imagine that, in the 14C, this peaceful village was one of Bulgaria's strongholds. Later on, it became the headquarters of the Macedonian revolutionary organisation. Today, the city, famous for its wine, attracts tourists who can enjoy a wine-tasting between visits to St-Nicholas's church and the History Museum.
