This very beautiful château, built above the ruins of a former fortress from which the sturdy keep still remains, became known thanks to one of its most famous owners, the Marquise de Maintenon. The former governess of King Louis XIV, who was to become his wife, extended and embellished the château and its French-style gardens. Vauban also built an (unfinished) aqueduct here, the aim of which was to supply water to the fountains of Versailles. The history of the chateau relates in its own unique way the Grand Siècle of Louis XIV.
