There is nothing medieval about this old town, but the maze of narrow streets surrounding Plaza Mayor gives a true idea of Habsburg Madrid. Crimson, pink or gold façades or grey stone arcades dotted with lanterns give onto uneven pavements that slope down towards the convents, Palacio and La Latina areas. This is where the oldest sanctuaries in the capital are to be found, along with typical tavernas and traditional painted wood shop fronts.
