The Museo del Prado houses the largest collection of Spanish painting in the world, but the Empire's past power meant that different kings could amass treasure troves of Italian, Flemish and German painting. Over the years, the Prado has undergone extensive modifications, the latest of which, carried out by the architect Rafael Moneo and inaugurated in 2007, increased its surface area from 25 600 to 44 300m2.
