The cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Almudena, whose construction lasted for over a century (the initial project dates from 1879), stands, next to the Royal palace, on Plaza de la Armería. It is depicted by a Neobaroque façade, in keeping with the style of the palace, while the interior is Neo-Gothic. It was consecrated by Pope John-Paul II in 1993.
