The Croix-Rousse district (separated into two large areas: the slopes and the plateau) still has a village feel, particularly on market days. It used to be the silk workers' district following Joseph-Marie Jacquard's invention, earning it the nickname of the "working hillside", in opposition to that of the Fourvière, the "praying hillside". Its traboules (covered passageways with many steps) made it possible to safely transport bolts of silk during bad weather.
