This pedestrianised square surrounded by restaurants and cinemas is incredibly vibrant. The fountain in the middle was erected in 1874 in memory of Shakespeare; opposite is a statue of Charlie Chaplin by John Doubleday (1980). For a long time, Leicester Square was London's entertainment epicentre, and the Empire Theatre building (1884) still stands on the north side. To the south is the TKTS booth, where you can get discount theatre tickets for performances the same day and the next day.
