This house, originally a small brick villa, was modified by Philip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, who added the rounded wings built in light brick. The house is now home to the magnificent Wernher Collection of European art, which boasts religious pictures by Filippo Lippi, paintings by the Dutch Masters (Metsu, Van Ostade, de Hooch), Renaissance jewellery of rare beauty, medieval ivory and Renaissance bronzes.
