Shrouded in mystery and stories of vampires - one of which hit the headlines in the 1970s - this cemetery, opened in 1839, is home to around 53 000 tombs. A delightful place for a bucolic stroll, the cemetery is divided into two by Swain's Lane. Famous people buried in the eastern section include writer George Eliot and Karl Marx, while the western section houses the graves of Michael Faraday and painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
