The Square Mile retains 39 of its churches although there were once many more. In 1666 there were around 100 in all, but the Great Fire destroyed 76 of them. Many were rebuilt but then came the Second World War... Among the most remarkable survivors is St Giles Crippelgate, which has been destroyed and rebuilt on numerous occasions during its 900 years of history.
