A 570ft obelisk (1939) recalls the victory by Texas troops in the 1836 Battle of San Jacinto, establishing their freedom from Mexican colonial rule. The obelisk is covered with fossilized Cordova shellstone; its exterior is under renovation. An elevator takes visitors to the top of the monument for a grand view. On the ground floor is the San Jacinto Museum of History, documenting Texas' formative years. Texas Forever! The Battle of San Jacinto is a 35min multimedia show about the struggle for independence.
