In the district of Ponto-Cho, the clip-clop of a geisha's wooden clogs can still occasionally be heard in the Pontocho-dori, a narrow little street (2m wide!) which goes on for half a kilometre, following the Kamo-gawa River. There are multitudes of modest little restaurants, some opening onto the river, and bars which are livelier. In the evening, lanterns light the way along the street. During the day, a few blocks away in the Nishiki Market, stalls are piled high with healthy local produce and arts and crafts.
