To reach the quays, situated near the confluence of two rivers, the Garnock and Irvine, your route will take you past original, picturesque housing complexes which fit in well with the old buildings lining the sea front. The quays lead on to immense tidal reservoirs and salt marshes which are home to a multitude of birds. To the south of the river mouth is a sandy beach with stabilised sand dunes and the huge Beach Park.
