Able to grow in many different types of soil but needing a lot of water, Atlas cedars have a very straight trunk that can reach up to 60m high and 2m in diameter. Trees over two centuries old are by no means uncommon; some are even thought to be contemporaries of the Marinid sultans. On the way to Jbel Hebri (2 104m), a volcanic cone dotted with cedars, don't miss the so-called Cèdre Gouraud, a cedar identifiable by its huge candelabra-shaped branch.
