Thirty-three temples are dotted about this peaceful "Buddhist way". At the start is a strange octagonal tower (a structure rarely seen in Japan), called the Sazaedo (1839). Inside, walking along the corridor decorated with images of the reincarnations of Kannon makes for an unusual pilgrimage. Chosho-ji stands at the end of the avenue, with its majestic, 16m-high gate, San-mon. The Chosho-ji contains a touching display of 500 little statues of the disciples of Buddha.
