Overlooking the east bank of Biwa Lake, Hikone Castle, built between 1603 and 1622 by the lord Ii Naosuke, is one of the oldest vestiges of the feudal age. Its keep, moat and ramparts have never been destroyed. The castle houses a small museum (collection of armour and Noh theatre costumes). From the Tenshu terrace on top of the three-storey keep, you can enjoy an unobstructed view over the lake. On the northeast side of the castle, a signposted path leads to the Genkyu-en, a fine landscape garden with Chinese touches.
