The Rocca was built on a square plan with corner towers dominating the village of Gradara. It was here that Giovanni Malatesta is said to have murdered his wife, Francesca da Rimini, on finding her in the arms of his brother, Paolo Malatesta; their passion is said to have been aroused through the reading of a courtly romance. Dante portrayed the inseparable couple in his Divine Comedy.
